The most difficult thing to make such watermelon tourmaline pendant is the process cutting huge watermelon tourmaline crystal into slices. During the process, many slices breaks into pieces or get cracked and only a few come out beautiful and as whole.

As a person who actually try to polish stones, I know how complex and difficult the process is. Thanks to that, I know how hard the stone workers do and I cherish their work even more. 

Simple but special is my aim in making jewelry. That’s why I decided to use freestyle wax pattern in making this piece. I carefully put the wax outside and shaped it into a pendant, then handed it to the silversmith for casting and finishing the final process.

This watermelon tourmaline pendant is simple and unique just as the way it is thanks to the stone. I do not add other things to distract the observers but let them focus on the stone only. Sometimes in life, we do not need much of complexity but something simple and still beautiful just the way we are.

WATERMELON TOURMALINE

General information about tourmaline 

Tourmaline is found around the world and has a variety of colors: Green, black, blue, pink, yellow, bicolor, sometimes tri-color and many other hues of each color, which make tourmaline a special type of gemstones. 

The name “Tourmaline” reflects this multicolored splendor.  It comes from the Sri Lankan word turmali, which can be translated as “stone with mixed colors” or “gem pebbles.”  

With the long history of tourmaline, each color has a specific name, for example: black tourmaline is called Schorl, green tourmaline is called Verdelite, blue tourmaline can be Paraiba Tourmaline or indicolite tourmaline. However, Dravite and Elbaite can appear in a rainbow of colors. And watermelon tourmaline belongs to Elbaite tourmaline. 

Watermelon tourmaline 

Amongst these types of Elbaite, watermelon tourmaline is a special type of bicolor tourmaline family. The crystal Ideally has a pink interior with a green ring outside.  When cut into thin cross-sections (slices)  it looks just like the delicious fruit – watermelon.
